Review
Mind Blowers was originally released on the White Rabbit label in 1983. The liner notes for Mind Blowers celebrate the musical experimentation of underground groups that occurred beginning in the summer of 1966. They also deride the efforts of Madison Avenue to cash in on the psychedelic phenomenon. Despite their claim that this compilation was an attempt to document psychedelic experimentation by underground bands, many of the tracks on Mind Blowers are straightforward garage rock. A few of the tracks are trippier, however, such as "Days of My Years" by the Traveling Salesmen and "Baby Won't You Let Me Tell You How I Lost My Mind" by the Spikedrivers. Another track along these lines is the standout "Boil the Kettle Mother" by the Id, which turns making tea into some sort of strange Oedipal act and ends in a wonderful raga freakout. The most interesting inclusion here is an early release by the Doors called "Go Insane", made from one of only three existing acetates. Truth be told, "Go Insane" is not all that good. In fact, in terms of listening pleasure, it's the worst track on this compilation, but an interesting artifact nonetheless. White Rabbit saw themselves as acting in the tradition of Lenny Kaye (compiler of the first Nuggets compilation) and promised more volumes of lost music, but for whatever reason they released only this one. Past & Present reissued Mind Blowers on CD in 2001, preserving the original artwork and liner notes. Unfortunately they also preserved the sound quality, which is not particularly good. Though much of the material on Mind Blowers has since appeared in better sounding collections, Mind Blowers has enough interesting tracks to make it worth seeking out.
