Review
The wonderful "Up in My Mind" by the Spontaneous Generation leads off this compilation. ("Back inside I ponder/I sit upright on the floor/I talk of love and music, yaeah/And I think of nothing more" Man, they just don't write 'em like that anymore!) While this track has appeared on other compilations, many if not most of the tracks on Psychedelic States: Georgia in the 60s are unique to this CD, including standouts "Found Love" by the Fly-Bi-Bites and "So Much" by Little Phil and the Night Shadows. According to the incredibly thorough liner notes, the Night Shadows were the most popular band in Atlanta in the mid-1960s and they have the distinction of being the first long-haired band in the area. The booklet shows a Billboard ad for the Night Shadows thanking the deejays for playing "So Much" which reads "OH MAN! ARE WE HAPPY/WE'RE HEADED FOR #1". That should have happened but didn't and the record languished in obscurity until Psychedelic States: Georgia in the 60s came along. It's clear from he liner notes, which are loaded with interesting little details and pictures of several of the bands, that the compilers went to great lengths to track down the artists who made these records long ago. Psychedelic States, on the Gear Fab label, is an excellent series and Georgia in the 60s is another worthy installment.
